The city of Rio de Janeiro was founded by the Portuguese empire so as to avoid the enemy French privateers who were stealing and trafficking wood and other valuable goods from Brazil in 1566. In fact, French troops fought against French soldiers for almost ten years approximately. But in 1763 Napoleon occupied Portugal and the Royal Portuguese Family moved to Brazil and declared Rio de Janeiro city as the new capital of the kingdom.
In this fashion, the city of Rio de Janeiro became a European capital city outside Europe.
